NHS Comprehensive Examination

Fully funded plus advanced scans (OCT & Optomap) to ensure a thorough and complete health check equivalent to what private patients receive in our comprehensive examination.

Private Comprehensive Examination

At The Optical People we believe in offering everyone the same standard of care and now offer just one tier of examination- the best. Our Comprehensive Eye Examination is our gold-standard examination which includes everything you need, and ensures a thorough and complete eye health assessment where proactive eyecare is at the heart of everything we do.

The Details

Included in all examinations (Private and NHS):

Visual field testing (if clinically required)

To assess peripheral vision and detect early functional loss.

Full case history & symptom review

We take time to understand your health, lifestyle, and concerns.

Detailed vision assessment

To determine your prescription and check your visual function.

Anterior eye examination

Slit lamp anterior eye examination to check cornea, lens, lids, and tear film. If clinically required HD photographs and videos are also captured as standard.

Posterior eye examination

Slit lamp examination of the retina, optic nerve, macula and other vital structures inside of the eye.

Pressure measurement (IOP)

Checks for glaucoma risk and other eye health concerns.

Time with your optometrist

Up to an hour with your optometrist if needed, to discuss results, answer questions, and create a personalised care plan.

Referral & management

If anything requires onward care, we can refer you to the required services. Sometimes this is to another specialist optometrist within our team (e.g. low vision service, medical retina team, prescribing team or contact lens service) and other times this might be to the hospital eye services or your GP.

In addition to this, both Private Comprehensive Examinations and NHS Comprehensive Examinations include:

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

3D scans of the retina and optic nerve to detect early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other retinal disease. Like an X-Ray for your eyes, all 11 layers of the retina can be analysed by your optometrist. This can detect eye conditions years before you can perceive symptoms and up to 4 years before an optometrist could detect signs.

Optomap ultra-widefield scan

Panoramic imaging of up to 80% of your retina in a single capture. An up to 200 degree widefield photograph of your eyes to check even the furthest peripheral areas where it is usually very difficult, if not impossible to assess without dilating drops (and sometimes even with dilation!).

Baseline & comparison

All images and scans are stored securely so we can track subtle changes year-on-year.

Eyeplan has a modular approach which ensures your plan is customised to suit your care requirements.

There are Eyeplan discounts available for NHS patients as well as under 26 year olds.
