Optomap:
Ultra-widefield imaging allowing early detection of any retinal issues. The Optomap system enhances our ability to diagnose retinal conditions by capturing up to 200° of the retina in a single image, far surpassing traditional methods. This wide view allows us to detect peripheral retinal pathologies that might otherwise go unnoticed, particularly in patients at higher risk, such as those with diabetes or a history of retinal detachment. This was a new diagnostic tool for us in 2023 and has undoubtedly saved the sight of numerous patients already, by picking up tears in the far periphery that could not be viewed by more traditional examination techniques. The hospital always receives clearly labelled images of tears which provides the evidence and location of the tear for swift treatment.
OCT Scans:
3D imaging for in-depth analysis of eye health. OCT (Optical coherence tomography) is a cornerstone of our diagnostic process, providing detailed cross-sectional images of the retina to detect and manage conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. This non-invasive technology allows us to identify abnormalities early, often before symptoms manifest, which is crucial in preventing vision loss. We integrated OCT into routine exams in 2013 to ensure every patient benefits from this advanced tool. We currently have two OCT machines and could not imagine optometry without them.
Accurate Visual Field Testing:
Humphries and Henson 9000 Perimetry are vital for assessing visual fields, particularly in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and neurological disorders. These advanced systems offer quick, precise tests tailored to each patient’s needs, allowing us to monitor progressive conditions effectively. Both machines enhance our ability to provide accurate diagnoses and develop effective management plans, ensuring the long-term preservation of our patients’ vision.
HD Slit Lamp Cameras:
High-resolution imaging for precise examinations. Using top of the range HD slit lamp cameras, which are installed in every consulting room, we ensure all patients are involved in their clinical decision making and educated on their conditions by showing them what we can see, as well as their improvements as they undergo treatment.
State-of-the-Art Testing and Treatment
Liquid Lens Phoropters:
Streamlined and accurate vision testing. This paired with the R-800 phoropter, which we have in two of our consulting rooms, allows us to dispense to an accuracy of 0.01 dioptres, using instantaneously changing liquid filled lenses during the refraction process. This provides patients with a visual experience from their spectacles like they have never had before.
Dry Eye Technology:
Diagnostics such as meibography, osmolarity testing, and treatments like Activa heat therapy and IRPL therapy. To further enhance our Dry Eye treatment offerings, we have incorporated Intense Regulated Pulsed Light (IRPL) therapy within our specialised Dry Eye suite. Together with the MYAH, measuring tear osmolarity, the Activa machine, lid exfoliation treatments, meibomian gland expression and the option of punctal plugs, we are ensuring that we can provide advanced therapeutic solutions for all types of dry eye, and deliver effective treatment which can significantly improve our patient’s quality of life.Advanced Therapies:
Including punctal plugs for tear retention and amniotic membranes for corneal healing. We are the first practice in Wales to offer Amniotic Membrane Implantation and are incredibly excited to be able to give such innovative and successful healing options to our patients.
