Sustainability Pledge: Eye Care with a Conscience

As part of a global effort to protect our planet, The Optical People are committed to sustainability in every aspect of our practice and the patient journey. In 2019, we were proud recipients of the Surfers Against Sewage Award, recognising our dedication to making Chepstow a plastic-free town.

Eco-Friendly Initiatives

  • Paper-Free Practice:

    Digital systems to reduce waste. Electronic records, e-mailed prescriptions, electronic ordering from our suppliers, recycled packaging whenever possible and much more.

  • Recycling Programs:

    Lions Club: We recycle old spectacles through the Lions Club initialtive. Patients from any practice are welcome to drop in other glasses to our collection point.

    Terracycle: contact lenses and their packaging are collected and given a second life when they are turned into children’s playground equipment.

    Shred Station- any other textiles, paper, plastics etc are handles by Shred Station who have a nothing to landfill policy and delivers a carbon neutral service.

  • Sustainable Products and Suppliers:

    Partnering with suppliers who prioritize eco-friendly, ethical and sustainable practices and carbon-neutral goals.

    Essilor: Our main supplier of lenses, Essilor, is just 19 miles away in Thornbury, reducing the carbon footprint of manufacture not only by being geographically close, but also by their policy which ensures all of their energy is sourced from renewable sources, their focus on recycling (nil to landfill waste management policy) and tracking their water consumption as well as electricity usage so that improvements can constantly be made.

    Feb31st: Frames which are made from wood, some of which are even harvested from trees which have fallen in storms.

    Sea2See: Frames that use collected marine plastic to create spectacles and sunglasses, while providing an income for the fishermen in Spain, France and West Africa who collect the plastics. Cases are even made from renewable cork.

    Silhouette: A company which is redefining premium eyewear with sustainability at its core. They produce 1.3million kWh of solar electricity every year, have a 100% carbon free headquarters and production site, recycle 104,000 litres of water daily, reusing it multiple times before final purification, 3D print materials with excess materials all being recycled and have successfully created a new bio-circular spectacle frame material made from organic waste from industries such as agriculture, forestry and aquaculture.

  • Refillable and Sustainable Products:

    Our very own stylish spectacle cleaning bottles and washable lens cloths. Free to refill forever for our Eyeplan patients.

    We are dedicated to using all refillable cleaning products in our clinics, bathrooms, kitchens etc. We buy washing detergents, hand soap, disinfectant spray, lens cleaning solution, alcohol for disinfecting, hand sanitiser gel and more in 5 litre bottles and in concentrated solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of transport as well as the quantity of plastic we use and avoid the use of one time wipes.

    Our toilet paper and tissues are from a company that uses 100% recycled paper.

    Our energy supplier and tarrif is one which ensures all of energy is 100% renewable.
